Jovan took his arm and urged him into a brisk walk. “You can’t just stop like that; your heart needs time to wind down.” He slid his hand down Trey’s arm and entwined their fingers.

Trey’s galloping heart speeded up again, and it was all due to the warmth of Jovan’s hand in his, the heat of his body pressed against his. They’d held hands before, but their fingers had never been interlaced nor palm to palm. The darkening sky thickened the atmosphere of intimacy building between them.

Despite his best efforts, he winced when Jovan squeezed his hand.

“What’s the matter?” Jovan immediately stopped and examined Trey’s reddened hand. “I knew something like this would happen.” His tone was angry, but the fingers caressing the welts on Trey’s hands were soft and gentle. “I don’t know what your fool of a father is thinking, sending you to the smithy when you’re already earning your keep with sales from your cakes and cookies.”

“Baking is for girls,” Trey repeated in his father’s growl, bitterness lacing the words. “He said I’m a man, so I should learn about iron and metal, not flour and eggs.” He glanced at his hands.

“Like I said, he’s a fool.” Jovan reached into his pocket and brought out a small tube.

“What’s that?” Trey asked, curious.

“Something for you.” Jovan removed the stopper and slipped it back into his pocket. “Hold out your hand.”

Cream. Even as Jovan squeezed and a transparent blob spurted out, Trey knew the ointment was for his wounds. Something shifted within him. No one since his mother had taken care of him like this.
